Aintree 08/04

15:25 - Buveur Dair - 12/1 each way 4 places available.

He needs no introducing here, a top class horse who has won this race and went odds on for this a couple of years ago. He had a while out and came back with a disappointing run when only managing second to the front running Navajo pass back in January. On the face of it that doesn’t look great, but as a 10 year old he’s more than entitled to come on for his seasonal reappearance and perhaps he’s just lost a little bit of pace for the 2mile trip. 12/1 is good each way value for a dual champion hurdle winner and previous winner of this race, especially with 4 places on offer. He skipped Cheltenham to come here and I hope this has been the plan.

16:05 Billaway 3/1 win and Captain Cattistock 40/1 each way 5 places available.

Desperately unlucky again not to win at Cheltenham, 3/1 looks a great price considering how consistent this horse is! The drop back in trip is no concern to me having won at the trip before, he deserves to win a big race like this and ran so well at Cheltenham. As well as the win bet on him I also like Captain Cattistock at 40/1 each way with 5 places available, a horse with a lot of class having placed in the Welsh National trial a couple of years ago, he hasn’t yet won a hunters Chase, but has finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th with another run where he looked the winner before unseating close to home. I think 40/1 is too big especially as some bookies are going 5 places.

16:40 Jan Maat 20/1 each way 6 places available.

He arrives here running off a low enough mark considering he’s a previous grade three winner, and he was coming to at least place on his penultimate start before falling. His run last time on paper looks disappointing but there’s a few interesting points. Rachel wasn’t on board that day, he was never really put in the race and travelled wide throughout, that sees his mark dropped slightly and this may have been the plan. He skipped the Grand Annual at Cheltenham, where he was targeted for last year before not getting home up the hill. I think Aintree will play to his strengths and 20/1 is available with 5 and 6 places.

17:15 Miss Lamb 16/1 each way 4 places available.

A good second to Eileendover in a listed bumper. That’s turned out to be a very strong race with subsequent Grade 2 winner and Cheltenham Grade 1 Bumper 6th Grangee in third behind her that day. Behind Grangee in fourth was Dragon Bones who on her next start won a mares’ listed race. I think 16/1 is a big price for this horse who may not reverse form with Eileendover but should hopefully place with 4 places available.
