Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle (Grade One)
14:30 Cheltenham 19/03
I always find this a bit of a trappy race which is often won by an outsider. A favourite hasn’t won since 2013 and last years Monkfish was the only single figure winner in the same time frame!
At the head of the market we have three Irish runners in Stattler, Fakiera and Torygraph. Stattler has some good form in the book having finished third behind Gaillard Du Mesnil and Gentlemansgame in the grade one last time out. That was over two miles six and I would more side with Fakiera out of the two as Fakiera was closing down late in that where as Stattler seemed to be weaker at the finish. More interesting still is Torygraph who ran well over less than two and a half showing he has some decent speed, but relished the step up in trip wining twice over two miles seven. I will take the three of them on here though as I just can’t see the value in them at current prices.
The one who I’ll be having a play on at a huge price is Pats Fancy for Rebecca Curtis at 50/1, a decent point to point horse, he is closely matched with Alaphillipe who is near the head of the market for this. They finished just a length apart on bumper debut over an inadequate 2 miles. When stepped up in trip he beat the subsequent winner Gladiatuer Allen. He then ran a very good second in the grade two version of this back in December. I was impressed that day and having course form over the trip is a plus. I think had he again come out and ran to that level next time he would be a fraction of the price he is now. He was pulled up in January in a similar grade two event over the three miles. He was never travelling that day and rightly pulled up. I just think the 50/1 about him is value as long as he turns up in good health and puts that run behind him.
Pats Fancy 50/1 0.5pts each way
