Goodwood Selections Day One

1:50

Bugle Major, winner over this trip in France as well as a couple of places against decent opposition, Winter Reprise and Magny Cours most recently. His reappearance this year back in the Uk was a little underwhelming, but at a huge 150/1 in the Royal Hunt Cup he travelled very strongly and was unlucky not to finish nearer having got stuck in traffic. The extra trip will suit and he could outrun his 33/1 price here.

Bugle Major 33/1 0.5pts each way 6/7 places on offer.

No bet.

Happy Power, this race is a hot contest for a group two, but I’m siding with Happy Power at 16/1. I think with this horse 7 furlongs is key, she was last of 8 over a mile last time and a staying on 4th of 12 in the Group One Diamond Jubilee over 6 furlongs before that. Finishing just over 2 lengths behind Dream of Dreams. There’s extra places on offer and I think a previous group two winner at this trip, should be a little shorter.

Happy Power 16/1 1pt each way 4/5 places on offer.

Amhran Na Bhfiann as hard a horse to get right as it is to pronounce, he won convincingly over 1 mile 6 in a group two contest last time out. That’s his best performance in some time, but he was previously third in last years derby. He’s shown he can mix it at the top and I think he deserves a shot at this. His only start over 2 miles plus was in the Gold Cup when he was utilised as a pace maker and didn’t stay home over the extra half mile that day. This two miles will suit slightly more and I think James Doyle is an excellent pilot and could outflrun his 40/1 odds. I will also have a win bet on Stradivarius who doesn’t need any write up, he won the Sagaro earlier this year and was still fourth in the gold cup even if not at his best. He could still win here running to a similar level. With 2/1 on offer for a horse like him, you just can’t say no to that.

Stradivarius 2/1 2pt win.

Amhran Na Bhfiann 40/1 0.5pts each way.

I’ll be having my token play on HTF Ornate and also El Astronaute as my main play. Ornate is a bit of a leap of faith after some really poor runs, but he won back on the all weather earlier this year and is getting well handicapped. Considering the manner in which El Astronaute won back in May he has since been dropped in the weights after a couple of lacklustre runs upped in class to listed races. I think he’ll be right up for it again tomorrow, as he has previously thrown in a couple of poor runs at times before bouncing back to his best. He’s 17/2 with 6 places on offer.

Ornate 33/1 0.5pts each way

El Astronaute 17/2 1pt each way 5/6 places on offer.

4:45

Not much form on display here, but I’m going to be taking a chance on Monets Sunrise for a trainer who’s won this twice recently, and with Ryan Moore on board could be worth a play at 12/1.

Monets Sunrise 12/1 0.5pts each way.

5:20

No bet in this race for me.

5:50

Caroline Dale for me in this one, returned to some better form recently with a very unlucky second and looks to go well here.

Caroline Dale 5/1 1pt win

6:15 Galway

Bowerman is overpriced a 50/1 after some poor runs looks fitter and this would have been targeted.

Bowerman 50/1 0.5pts each way 6 places.
