Kim Muir Handicap Chase

Updated: Mar 17, 2021

16:50 Cheltenham 18/03

I will be having another look at the face after final declarations with maybe one more selection after Run Wild Fred is a non runner.

Despite being an open handicap the Kim Muir has only been won by one horse at a price bigger than 16/1. Usually the winners tend to be single figure odds. There are two at the front of the market who I’ll be backing each way as they should at least be placing.

First up we have Run Wild Fred who last year won a grade three novice hurdle, since chasing this campaign he has been unable to get his head in front but does have some good form. Most recently he was an excellent second to Coko Beach in the Thyestes. Before that he was second behind Longhouse Poet in a beginners chase, with recent Grand National trial winner The Big Dog in third behind him. He arrives here in good form and has an unchanged mark of 140 which I feel is very lenient and will be a better chaser than that in time. At 6/1 this is a short price for a handicap, but I am very confident in him running a big race.

Deise Aba is currently 14/1 but I can see him shortening on the day to a single figure price. He was fifth in this last year and runs off the same mark again this time. His first two starts this season he was pulled up but bounced back to form after a short break winning a good handicap from Coo Star Sivola the 2018 Ultima Winner. If he turns up here in the same form I think 14/1 is good value and chance that he would at least be placing.

Edit- At a bigger price we have Milanford who I originally fancied for the National Hunt Chase as an outsider, he’s a shorter price here but I still think he’s value. He has been running in some decent enough chases finishing 2nd on all three occasions. The best of which being a close second in a grade two chase from Hurricane Harvey who was a very decent horse over hurdles last year, third to Mcfabulous and 2 from 3 in novice races. He has done nothing wrong this year as a chaser until pulling up last time out. I think Milanford has stayed on well in his races and wouldn’t have been suited last time by the omission of two fences and I chance that he has a little in hand off of 138 so I'll be having a small each way bet.

Selections-

Milanford 20/1 1pt each way

Deise Aba 14/1 0.5pts each way
