Paddy Power Plate

For this race I had earmarked a horse a long way out, Coqolino, who’s unfortunately not running at the festival, I had advised him at 14/1 Any Race but thought this would be his likely target. I find this division can be a bit of a minefield, with horses stepping up/dropping back in trip.

The horse I've sided with is one who you know will have this race as a target, a horse who owes me nothing, last years’ fourth, Coole Cody at 25/1. Coole Cody thrives in course and distance handicaps. He has ran at the track 12 times a staggering 36% of his career runs have been at Cheltenham. He's been ever-present in the course and distance handicaps this year, as well as running in a handicap hurdle over the equivalent distance on the old course. He won the November meetings' Paddy Power Gold Cup in 2020 as well as looking the winner before falling in that race this year. He made amends at the December meeting this year, winning the Racing Post Gold Cup by 2 lengths from the front. His mark was raised to a career high after that and he appeared to struggle in the two January course and distance races on New Years’ and then Trials Day. He‘s back down to a mark of 145, having won the December race off 143 and is set to carry just 1lb more than his fourth in this race last year. A super reliable horse that nearly always runs his race and normally a game front runner meaning he should keep out of the fray and shouldn‘t get hampered by other horses. There is more than likely some more unexposed runners, but he will definitely run his race. I think 25/1 is a great each way price and hope he can at least place in the race again, but would be an extremely popular winner.
