Saturday 29th May Selections

Today looks like a tricky one but there‘s a lot of extra places on offer and hopefully I have found a few good ones. It’s been a watching brief for me the last few weeks as I’ve been waiting for the flat season to really get going before getting stuck in. It was a bit hit and miss at the start so hopefully now there‘s more form to go off, it’ll be a little bit easier to work out.

The first one I like is in the tricky looking 1.45 at Haydock, with six places on offer I feel happy enough to play this race with Bernardo O‘Reilly at a fair 11/1. After his good win last September he followed up with a good sixth in Class Two company before his form appeared to drop off; the break has done him well and he showed some good form first time out when a close sixth of 18 when dropped back down to a Class Three. For that run his mark has dropped down to that winning mark from last September and with Angus Villiers again claiming 7, I think he rates an excellent chance. As well as the main bet on him, I will also have a go on Brian The Snail who is rated much higher on the all weather, but did come 3rd in the Stewards Cup at Goodwood last year. He has the ability to do well here especially if on a going day and 33/1 with six places could be good value. The next race I liked was the Achilles stakes which is the 14:20 at Haydock. Some bookies are offering four places here which I’ll be taking advantage off hopefully. El Astronaute is a huge price against Kings Lynn here, the two met at Chester with El Astronaute winning by 3/4 of a length. I don’t see any reason to suggest Kings Lynn reversing that here, he was closing slightly at the line but was receiving 3 pounds and had the advantage of a recent run when it was El Astronaute‘s reappearance. With turn under his belts and at level weights I will play this as a win bet. The each way play I like is one of my horses to follow for the year, Ornate. At a massive 33/1, he often leads which might be difficult with El Astronaute in the field, but this horse came 3rd to Battash last year in the Kings Stand himself beating the old course record, and with four places hopefully can be following our selection home.

The final race I’be played is the 16:10 at Punchestown, one that I posted last time out in Bridge Native. It‘s a big field and because of that we get 5 places here and at 14/1 here he has a good each way chance. I was impressed with his fitness run on the flat where he kept plugging on in behind Derby 3rd Amhran Na Bhfiann. That and his next hurdles run would have blown away the cobwebs and he was a good 3rd last time out over 2 miles 5. Most of his winning comes at about 2 miles so the drop in trip should suit him here and he is usually very consistent. With 5 places I’m hoping he should be there abouts!

13:45 Haydock - Bernardo O’Reilly 11/1 1pt each way (6 places)

Brian The Snail 33/1 0.5pts each way (6 Places)

14:20 Haydock - El Astronaute 9/2 1 pt win

Ornate 33/1 0.5pts each way (4 places)
