Old News with 5 places at 16/1 is well treated on old form, won well on last start for Richard Hughes. Has since been gelded and improved each run for new trainer. Rates an excellent chance here with Hollie Doyle booked again looks to bang there. 0.5pts each way.
Baryshnikov at 18/1 with again 5 places was busy last year for connections running nine times including some big field races. He finished in the top five in all occasions. Most recently finishing a good fifth on soft ground in a valuable York handicap. He gets the better ground he does better on and with the extra places should be thereabouts if in the same form as last year.
Finally we have Gunmetal again with 5 places each way at 12/1. Though his last win was over two years ago now in the Great St Wilfrid off off 97z He has come back from a short break in good form, a fourth in a bunch finish last time out should have him bang here off his lowest mark in years of 79. Even if vulnerable to one of the younger rivals here at 12/1 I can definitely see him in the top five.
Edit- I’ve got another three selections having had a closer look.
One I originally had as a Boodles fancy, Tinnahala in the 2:45 at Ascot. An ex flat horse who achieved a peak RPR of 79 on the flat, which although not top class is still decent, a quiet start to hurdles with a fourth and second in juvenile races either side of Christmas. Most recently he got a win under his belt in another juvenile race winning in good style. Despite being top weight here I think he will end up being much better than the current 126 rating he has. Interestingly he missed Cheltenham but I still think with four places he will be there abouts. Especially on better ground on which he did better when on the flat. The horse I can’t get right Royaume Uni would be the danger for me, but at 3/1ish isn’t back able as an each way angle.
Next I like the look of Up Helly Aa in the 3:25 at Naas. A super consistent horse who has never finished out side of the top three, with three group three places, a listed second and a listed win. The one mile two furlongs seems to be his optimal trip whereas a few here may be better but are running over suboptimal trips for their reappearance. Broome and Numerian seem to want further and King of Comedy’s best form has been over a mile. Njord also does better back at a mile and I think 11/1 for a horse getting his conditions and never not been placed is too good to be true!
Finally we have the similarly named Up Helly Aa King, a horse who doesn’t really seem to run badly. He is flexible trip wise having good form at three miles and also at two and a half from today. I think he is better at this trip and it’s his strong travelling style that enables him to be versatile and step up in trip. A strongly run two miles four should see him to best effect and he has been close a few times in good handicaps. Hopefully today is his day but at 13/2 with 4 places I’d be confident in at least place money here.
